I remember being puzzled by this and many other numbers that kept cropping up. 32, 64, 128, 256, 1024, 2048… Why do programmers and electronic engineers hate round numbers? The other set of numbers that was mysterious was timber and sheet materials. They cut them to 1220 x 2440mm and thicknesses of 18 and 25mm. Are programmers and the timber merchants part of some diabolical conspiracy?

  • Is this mostly a ADHD thing? They tried to make me learn times tables at school but that never stuck. Recently had to solve a problem with a CRC and part of that was manually calculating a long division in binary. At some point realised I didn’t even know how to do that in decimal so wound the clock back 35 years and learnt it from scratch. Badda bing badda boom, working CRC 🤓

  • It’s almost as if this is a computer architecture designed for idiots who don’t know or care what a file is or for what purposes their data is being harvested. Everywhere I hear people falling over themselves to declare that the tablet smartphone was apple’s golden gift to the world. Try to do any serious work on one, it’s fucking annoying.

Whenever we make technology accessible to stupid people it becomes irritating to use and a privacy nightmare.

  • What evidence do you have that there is crime in your neighborhood, have you seen any firsthand? How well do you know your neighbours and wider community, are they concerned about any threats? Worrying about something like this is not healthy. I can’t imagine living somewhere I need to continually look over my shoulder.
