  • So don’t give them access to every device you can put your hands on. I had one computer growing up and I didn’t die. You not being able to figure this out doesn’t obligate the rest of the world to be Sesame Street. You brought them into the world, and you are putting these devices in front of them. It is your responsibility, not everyone else’s.

My elders never hesitated to say no to me when the answer was no. They were not worried about “alienating” me in that way. They weren’t there to be my buddy, they were there to raise me. You can’t be both of those things 100% of the time. You often have to pick one at the expense of the other.

  • I got shadowbannned after posting about politics.

I never called for or celebrated violence, didn’t upvote pictures of Luigi (which they have a STRANGE hard-on for) or any of that. I just posted neutrally-worded opinions.

Shadowbanning is an abusive behavior and Reddit has been about that for well over a decade. On Twitter, you do something they don’t like, they just tell you, “you have to delete this tweet and wait 12 hours” or whatever. On Reddit, your account just gets “weird” with strange error messages. You have to go digging for information on the phenomenon because they don’t display a message or send an email about it.

The cute little aliens are there to paper over the fact that Reddit’s leadership has no concept of user advocacy. You’re just rows in a few tables to them. You’re the product that’s being sold, and as far as they’re concerned that gives you the same rights as any other product on a shelf.

They are still sending me emails with cute little aliens in them, even though my account is hosed. This is how disjointed they are.

Someone else wrote that on Reddit, the users and admins hate each other. I think that’s true.

  • Update: Created a new account (there are two subs I still want to follow… obviously any others are a lost cause) and the account is half-broken. It can apparently comment, but the profile and my avatar won’t load.

I’ll leave it for a few days and see if it improves, but I’m not hopeful. I don’t think I’ll bother trying to use Reddit for general purposes unless they get a better CEO. By that time, my guess is that Lemmy and the new Digg will have vacuumed away enough sane users that Reddit will never recover.

  • Last night, I kept getting “Empty response from endpoint” on and off. This morning, it was all I got, replying to any thread anywhere, including forums I never visit. Tried the website, “Failed to create comment.”

No indication as to why. No message stating I’d been banned or otherwise had my account restricted. No email either. Just cryptic error messages.

I wasn’t going around making trouble, either. Just posting stuff that didn’t break any rules. I’m careful about that.

You do something they don’t like on Twitter, they specifically tell you you’re limited and for how long. I guess Reddit thinks communicating with users about changes to their accounts is totally unimportant?

So I deleted my account and came here.
