True, true… The techpriest vibes I’m getting out of this is because it’s a minor to non-existant improvement that might or might not be placebo is achieved by seemingly outlandish cure. As if the angry spirit of the fridge needed appeasing so that it stops haunting your mouse.

  • There is so much unpaid labor that big tech depends on. If they had to fairly pay for all that work through donations or otherwise they would go bankrupt, every single on of them. Big tech grew so massive because on open source, but it also helped open source grow. big tech will also die because they are increasingly just a leech-like middleman that just sits upon a mountain of free work and whose relative sliver of code contribution in comparison to the total code in a product is getting smaller and smaller and big tech is therefore increasingly a burden and not a asset to societies, economies and other companies.

Governments should be funding the most popular open source software that the world relies on

profits of business have always been dependent on governments funding research and free work done by individuals to turn a profit. Open source is nothing new on this regard.

  • Nah, just going along with Ukraine war and letting it get to and pushing to the point of war is a testament that Washington and Brussels are a foreign policy monolith. That finally sold it for me. EU is ready to sacrifice it’s interests to drive their perceived transatlantic interests that the two political classes mostly share. EU political elite and media mainly hate Trump because he showed that EU capitals and Brussels are bunch of losers with no real political agency, who got conned into supporting and prolonging this unwinnable war to the hilt and are now being left to hold the bag.

First concrete move towards EU independence would be to stop this war and normalize with Russia, but in this fucked up world Trump wants both and EU wants neither. That is the fucked up world we live in. EU wants further conflict on it’s continent and US doesn’t want a war in Europe.

I do personally want European independence, but I see that EU in it’s current state is not a force for it, nor is it good for Europeans.

  • So it’s made by the EU in the sense that the maintainers are likely citizens of the EU, I guess

Even after that, be reminded that this current mania in the EU has nothing to with being anti-american or wanting to dump American products or services themselves. The people who are most into this are anti-Trump, not anti-american or fundamentally against Europe being subordinate to the US. Most of them are probably secretly wanting the world to return to 2024 and EU being US junior partner of “the west” and happily eating MacDonalds and using microsoft services. It’s not an European sovereigist movement at it’s core and therefore it has not staying power after Trump or Maga.

It might be that these people are just Foss enthusiasts with pure intentions wanting to promote the cause by riding the wave. However if the wave is just a meme conjured because of Trump then this project or things like it have no staying power or future even if it really being an EU project or being adopted tomorrow.

  • This leak is really scetchy, tbh. If it’s real then it’s probably happening because of the HarmonyOS NEXT that came out late last year. With that they basically dropped the previously used custom android/linux kernel for their own totally own proprietary HarmonyOS kernel. However with that they also lost support for android and linux code sideloading in the process and replaced it with some linux translation layer.

I always thought that HarmonyOS was meant to be more of a Android replacement that also had it’s place in stuff like TVs, cars, IoT and smart devices, but they still tried PCs with it, but it was more like chromebook-like toy computer for web browsing and text editing than a full pc. It seemed like a competent product android and android smart device replacement, but I never saw it as a serious competitor for Windows, MacOS or Linux desktop. If them plan is just be self sufficient and ditch US code, then you can do more in the linux ecosystem and get more app support right out of the gate and not have to ask everybody to rewrite their code for your custom OS. With linux-laptops they will have global markets for their computers, when as Harmony OS and it’s still are best in China’s own ‘software lagoon’ where third parties care more about developing for Huawei app store.

I haven’t been on NVIDIA for a while so i couldn’t tell for sure. I know that nvidia raytracing works on linux, but I’m not sure how it goes with the open drivers. If the noveau performance and stability is still somewhat lacking in general, then if both open drivers and raytracing are important to you then AMD is still the better bet.
