  • I had a former workplace like that, it was beautiful 🥹

We had a hot seat meeting where each department representative wasn’t even in the room until their individual staggered start time kicked in. One out, one in, cycling through each department until the meeting was over. They get to go back to their work and not be ‘meat’ in the room for fifteen minutes or more, we got focused reports from each as they filed in and out.

Sometimes I miss working for Germans, but “alles in Ordnung” cuts both ways - good luck breaking through the bureaucracy reporting chain and getting quick results

  • I’m not deriding the genius science-coup of appealing to royal ego, or pretending that there’s a desiccated thumb we’re using as a standard.

They changed in 2019 from physical reference ‘blocks’ for the shared weakness as all the other systems that have a ‘master’ calibration unit - whether that’s the SI kilogram or a cubit, or the goddamn kings arm. If the ‘master’ calibration unit changes, that introduces imperceptible drift.

This becomes even more important for actual science - say your scale manufacturer calibrates against the standard ‘master’ measure last week, but your prior lab scales are older. Or apply that across different countries even - they all calibrated against the ‘master’ standard, but minute changes between years or decades looses the authentic standard of X. Dust, temperature, damage, etc all can very slightly throw off the consistency

  • Look at the games Remedy have been making since splitting from Rockstar.

I really enjoyed Control and the Alan Wakes for the plot and narrative decisions. That’s who Remedy have become, story focused with emphasis on world building. MoCap actors, FMV segments, parallel world building via audio logs and journals, etc while keeping the lessons learned from the Max Payne series for the gameplay combat loops.

All the Max Payne games are mechanics centric; tight gunplay and bullet-time combat. They also have decent-to-solid plots, but I didn’t replay MP2 dozens of times because I wanted the Mona-Max arc’s dopamine hit, nor pathfinding through NYC apartment mazes. Nimble combat against formidable and fair AI is the core part of that series.

It wouldn’t be what you want it to be, and that’s okay that it’s in the past. Remedy have worked an EU and are leaning into that instead, and have done well consistently.
