Technology implies belligerence.
Technology is a war we wage against nature; technology is a means of asserting ourselves and usurping nature’s rule, which is necessarily a violent act.
Yeah I’m sure I’ll have much better luck on the .ml instance 😅
Nobody here misinterpreted it except the purists who did it intentionally to troll, show off and talk down to people.
No I understand what en masse means. I just don’t subscribe to your inflexible interpretation.
Language is a tool for communication. It’s for the masses, not something to be gate kept or preserved by the priests of lingual orthodoxy. If the words you use convey the intended meaning to the listener, then the wording is adequate.
If everyone’s use of language was as rigid as the people insisting we can only use the phrases as they existed when they were imported to an English court by a Norman conqueror a thousand years ago, then we’d all still be communicating by banging rocks together and grunting. The English language evolves every day. It’s alive.
Yeah turns out speech here isn’t so free when your opinions run counter to what the mods deem politically correct.
Which is the whole point of freedom of speech.
Free speech that the mods agree with that is. I was perma banned for c/Europe for privately objecting when a moderator removed this image I posted in a reply decrying antisemitic conspiracy theories in their forum. The mods left the libelous post up, and deleted my sarcastic, but otherwise civil response.
Maybe my opinion was wrong, but it certainly wasn’t dangerous, hateful, threatening or intentionally misleading, as the original post was. Lemmy has a lot going for it, but let’s not pretend that free speech on this site is anything other than window dressing. The Mods are still judge, jury and executioner inside their fiefdoms.
It just hasn’t become a problem for the majority of users, because we’re a relatively small, ideologically homogeneous community. If the fediverse ever becomes mainstream, you’ll start seeing that freedom of speech disappear as moderators sort out the dissenters, and authoritarians work their way into positions of authority.
Which is French for in mass.
It doesn’t really matter what kind of engine it is if it’s going fast enough.
Anything with enough mass and acceleration to move a human being from planet to planet in a reasonable timeframe has the kinetic energy required to wipe out a city. Once you start reaching relativistic speeds, you can take out entire planets by simply not slowing down on approach.
Akshually, there’s only one Sol-ar system.
The fact is that any manned vehicle capable of interplanetary travel is by the nature of the energies involved, also a weapon of mass destruction. A spaceship is a weapon in the same way a car can be a weapon.
So either you massively restrict access to this technology, or you create a system of surveillance and defense that is so pervasive and effective that it makes 1984 look benign, OR you just say fuck everyone else and use that weapon to remove yourself from range of everybody else’s weapons.
Proliferation is an existential problem for anyone in range.
millions dead
Same. I’m about two days ahead of anyone else I know. If it’s even slightly off, I’ll start retching. I’m a cook, so it isn’t actually completely useless.
Why don’t you mind your own fuckin business?
