Thank you, that’s an important distinction. I hope they can be trusted to live up to that. However it still feels l pretty problematic to bring them in and would be a lot of opting in to debate and implement. It remains a pretty big violation of user privacy and trust and it says here:
As if that weren’t bad enough, preparations for the sale went poorly, and it seems large categories of Tumblr posts that weren’t supposed to be sold were added to the mix anyway. That data includes:
Private posts from public accounts
Posts on deleted or suspended accounts
Unanswered asks
Private answers
Explicit posts
Posts from partner accounts, like ad campaigns where Tumblr doesn't own the rights. (Apple is specifically named here.)
One advantage over wordpress is that it avoids bringing its parent company, Automatic, into the Fediverse.
From Wikipedia:
In February 2024, Automattic announced that it would begin selling user data from Tumblr and WordPress to Midjourney and OpenAI.
It is a bit disappointing that they aren’t touring outside of that area. I’m on the East Coast and would love to attend this and I’m sure comrades outside Turtle Island would as well. Although it’s certainly forgivable as travel can get costly. Given that it’s listed as “West Coast Tour” I’m going to hope it goes well and try to remain optimistic that there will be an “East Coast Tour” and more to follow.
I’d also be interested in concrete info about what’s going on there and certainly hope such a project isn’t tainted by some problematic people within it.
Tthanks. When you reply to posts or comments, consider commenting on the content of the post as well as the form
I understand your sentiment and appreciate it but I disagree with it. I’m not offended but I’m curious if you read all this. In no way is anyone glorifying suicide or encouraging it and his friend from the military states clearly that that’s not what this was. I didn’t read this is as glorifying or martyring him but honoring the message and who this man was. I’m sad as well but would rather do that without directing anger at those remembering him.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! It definitely is. You may also appreciate Democracy Now’s coverage yesterday where they interviewed his friend from the military https://youtu.be/6f8MYAF1L9M?si=vmyZ25IK8fIg9-22
If you are posting on walled-garden big tech site like Reddit, Instagram, Twitter / X, the site and therefore the company certainly owns your content and all the metadata attributed to it. You’re the product. This is why most of us are here on the Fediverse where things are different. Maybe if it’s your personal photo you took than you can make a copyright claim to some degree and download your data tediously but once it’s on their network it’s generally theirs to do as they please, whether that be sell to Google or any other advertiser or use on in-house advertising. Often without proper informed consent and not always legally. It’s definitely a scam, I agree. Hopefully this exposes it more and brings more people to places on the Fediverse where there’s no owner/seller/buyer of your data or anything else you contributed.
So it’s user generated content that is a product for Reddit to sell, like most big tech companies do, as I said.
It’s content that Reddit users generated which apparently is theirs to sell.
I imagine the mods of this community might have a more thorough answer but for me the short answer is “no” or “not exactly”. It’s most of the things you just mentioned although AI probably won’t be super popular to everyone here. The Solarpunk Manifesto states: “Solarpunk envisions a built environment creatively adapted for solar gain, amongst other things, using different technologies. The objective is to promote self sufficiency and living within natural limits” . In many ways it’s a reaction to AnPrim that embraces technology and optimism about the future and I haven’t seen any AnPrims write about their positive views of our movement.
That’s definitely not the type of stuff I’d like to discover there. Decentralization is great but not if it just means hyper localization to the point that it’s hard to see content from other instances. It seems like the development of Peertube has gotten pretty stagnant, especially compared to other platforms on the Fediverse. A few years ago it ranked just behind Mastodon in monthly active users . Since then the Fediverse has gotten much more active and the developers of Mastodon, Pixelfed and Lemmy have all adjusted to it and made advances in their software, overtaking Peertube in Monthly Active Users. Hopefully the developers at Peertube can make some similar adjustments to bring in more users and more content.
I love Peertube but but finding content can be challenging at times. I just added it so hopefully this helps. Should make de-googling much easier.
I’m from Boston and this is painfully accurate. Especially the last line. My last job was a delivery job and me and the other person were constantly questioning if it was one lane or two.
“Betrayed by this town / Let’s burn it all down “ might be the most relevant chorus of today’s music. It’ll be stuck in my head all night and would fit right in at most protests
I’m on a small pixelfed instance as well and the global feed can be useful for discovering users on other pixelfed instances and also for viewing mastodon posts with pictures. Similar to mastodon it will expand as you follow more people so keep an eye on it and maybe use your mastodon account to find more photographers using hashtags like #photography. Your discover page should show photos under trending hashtags as well so check for that and use search under hashtags. It does show local trending photos accounts at the moment, you’re correct. Dansup, the pixelfed developer, says in the next update for the beta app which is shipping soon and going public soon, the discover page will be expanding to show trending users and photos from across the fediverse.
Try replacing the batteries. That’s often the reason for this type of thing.
