Well, the question for me back then was printing wide, so the selection was quite limited from the start. And laser was completely out of the equation, as anything printing wider than 21cm was industrial (size of a bus and price of a house) back then.
Don’t worry, I consider lasers, too.

A Canon printer. Not just a simple one, but a big (wide) one with real ink tanks, about 20 years ago.
Under Linux, I could only access basic printing services with that, and this only by using a default driver not made by Canon that happened to work. So I contacted Canon to get a proper user manual to create a proper device driver for this (something I could have done without problems), and basically got the answer that they would not support this, as “open source is theft of intellectual property”. They also had some very choice words about Linux in general.
I assumed I just got an asshole on the phone, so when I attended Cebit a short time later (back then the biggest trade fair in Europe for things like that), I went to the Canon booth, explained my issue, and basically got the same reply. So I sold the Canon printer and bought an HP one. At least HP supported Linux and supplied working drivers. Sadly, they have really gone down the drain since that, so the next printer will be a different brand again…
Fuck that thing. THREE slots? I had to abandon one project and look for alternatives because my GFX card already block one slot from being used, but blocking two is crazy.
I only tried GNOME long enough to see how crap it is, and have been a happy KDE user for years.

Back when I was in school, I was working on the side on expanding an ERP system for a customer. Said customer got a stack of printouts from their main supplier each January: The new price list. They meticiously typed that 300+ pages list into their own ERP system, and then checked it for errors. This took the boss and his wife a good part of January and February. Every year.
So I told him that the main supplier already has that data in a computer, why does he not ask to get the price list on disk, and I see whether I can get them into the system via a software import. He called them, asked me back if “IBM Format” would be OK, and I said yes. Surprise: The supplier had an IBM mainframe and sent us an 8" floppy. Luckily, the boss knew the right people with the right equipment and got me a copy on 5.25" and in ASCII (the original was in EBCDIC).
It took me one day to figure out the format, write an importer, and run it to completion. Boss and wife were very happy.

There are GSM modems that can be used by the server to send an SMS. I nearly bought one when it was cheap, but noticed just in time that the GSM level of that device was 3, which is no longer available here. And it needs a valid Sim card to work.
Probably. Even including the RAM on chip and the rest of the mainboard, too. Take a modern flash chip, and you can emulate a vintage sized HDD with it.
What is their intended market? I see no real use for such a box. Heck, even Linux will probably come to a crawl on that box. And you can probably build something ARM based for the same price with eight gigabytes of RAM and running circles around the 386.
