  • On working days before 16 o’clock bank transfers inside EU are instantaneous. After that, next working day. If the shop has the same bank as the customer, it’s always instantaneous.

But, the shop receives immediate confirmation that the money has been successfully taken from the customer’s account and will arrive soon.

…which is actually how it works with card payments as well. With card payments, the shop receives the money about a week later, but gets an immediate confirmation that the money is on the way.

  • I’d like to know who got the idea to name the system with a word meaning “tax” in Finnish, one of the official languages of EU… Both are related to money, so there is a possibility for confusion.

(We used to always use w, and had a reform some ~century ago to allow using v instead. Therefore, w is considered another form of v in Finnish, and thereby wero equals vero)

“cz” marks the same sound as the English “ch”. “j” marks the same as “y” in “yes”. Otherwise you read it letter by letter, a bit as if it was Spanish.

So… Is Ch’yvinos’tavch legible enough? :) Although, the pronounciation of the j would be so weak that you could perhaps skip it. It does alter the sound a bit, but doesn’t really sound as an independent sound in this word. So, also Ch’vinos’tavch could maybe be a valid transcription? And of course real Polish language does not have the combination czj anyway :)

Seems so. Wikipedia tells there are seven classes of vertebrates:

    • Agnatha (jawless fishes, paraphyletic)
    • Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes)
    • Osteichthyes (bony fishes, paraphyletic)
    • Amphibia (amphibians)
    • Reptilia (reptiles, paraphyletic)
    • Aves (birds)
    • Mammalia (mammals)

So yes, fishes is the same thing as vertebrates.

Probably because if you were a vertebrate living in the sea, you needed some sort of gills and fins and such. And those are what makes people assume something is a “fish”.

  • Try oat milk, at least in coffee. Even people who otherwise have nothing against cow milk tend to say that oat milk is better in coffee than cow milk is. I’ve met only some who think cow milk suits coffee better. In my opinion oat milk is also better in cereals and porridge, but that’s something people often disagree upon :)

The dairy company Arla would be in trouble if they had to do this :D

Arla Finland has one of the few most prominent nazis in Finland in their board of directors. There was a bit of a scandal because of this about a year or two ago, but Arla’s Finnish daughter company said “we already know, but he has promised not to be a nazi during working hours, and it’s every employee’s personal choice what they do in their free time.” And Finland was okay with that (!!)

Guess if I have bought their products even once after that? 🙃

  • The problem is, the person saying “these guys are nazis” could be simply lying.

A good example is Putin funding nazis everywhere in ex-USSR since around 2005, then managing to get Europeans to think the Ukrainian freedom movement was somehow a nazi movement even though the prevalence of right-wing extremism was growing until 2014 just like in the Russia and started decreasing in 2014, while it kept rising in the Russia and Russia-controlled areas such as Crimea.

If the Russia was to gain control over Ukraine, the prevalence of right wing extremist attacks would start growing again like it did until 2014. And yet, a lot of Europeans, especially in Germany, are opposing Ukraine because of the "these guys are nazis, nazis=bad mindset. Nazis are bad. It’s just important to understand that someone accusing someone of being a nazi doesn’t mean that the someone actually is a nazi.

The mindset has caused large parts of Ukraine to fall under circumstances that cause there to be more fascism. Anti-fascism has ended up promoting fascism in this case.

I have not read about what Proton’s owners have said and will delve into that now. But my experience, having lived in Ukraine in 2015 and 2016 and in Germany between 2008 and 2010 (and still having good friends there), is that many are eager to jump on a bandwagon of lynching an accused nazi, even if the accuser himself is a nazi and the accused is not.

It is ugly seeing precisely those who would be needed for fighting fascism work as errand boys for fascists.

  • I would say that having three buttons of similar size would do no harm to ease of starting for those with no preexisting account.

    So:

    [ Join Lemm.ee ]

    [ Join another instance ]

[ Log in to your instance ]

The login button could be on a different colour, but its shape and size should be the same as of the two other options, and, in my opinion, it should be grouped together with them.

(And indeed! Voyager is an awesome app and I’m complaining here only because I’ve seen you strive for excellent quality. Thank you very much for this awesome app! ❤️)

  • I asked for a person without a Lemmy account to install Voyager and make some screenshots. So, here’s what my experience was like, and apparently that of others as well. I hope it helps understand in which way the average user is an idiot :) Here goes:

First, I launch the program. This is the screen I get:

So, I’ve already got an account, so I don’t need to join Lemmy. Therefore, I choose the other option, “Pick another server”, in order to tell which server my user account is on, and log in to that server.

    Then I’m in this screen:

I choose Sopuli and all I get is a form for creating a new username. But why would I want to create a new one? I tried long-pressing the sopuli.xyz text, and got nothing.

Obviously, in the first screen there is the “Log in” button, but because there was “Join” and “The other option”, I had assumed the “other option” must include the login. The text can be interpreted that way as well.

And, at the point when I was already at the list of Lemmy servers, the “Log in” option was nowhere to see, and I didn’t come up with the idea of going back to the first screen, because I assumed I had already seen both of the buttons there, and I was sure I had pressed the button that was not “Join lemm.ee”.

Then I gave up. Some days later I accidentally launched the program again when I was supposed to do something completely different on my phone. Oops. But, the good thing was, I got to that first screen again. And I double-checked that I’m indeed pressing the “Pick another server” button in order to log in with my pre-existing username, and then I noticed the Log In text that is not a button. And pressed it and found out that yes, Voyager does actually support using pre-existing usernames! And nowadays I’m using Lemmy.

Now I’ve heard of a few people who have installed Lemmy and all of them have first given up, and then tried again after I’ve told them to “look for the hidden Log In button in the first screen”.

“Log in” is what most people will want to do, so people will assume that it will be one of the most prominent buttons. There can be reasons not to make it more prominent than it is; in that case the next screen, with the list of servers, could have a button for “Actually, what I want to do is log in with a username I already have!”
