I have seen those on blog and news sites, a thin horizontal bar (sometimes under the floating title) that fills as you scroll to the bottom. I don’t get it either.

I see Microsoft Dynamics 365 and would like to introduce you its little brother: Microsoft Dynamics NAV. The language is C/AL, offshoot of Pascal, code editor does not support multi-line selection (let alone any features like highlighting or navigation), and source code control is managed by locking files.

Recently, saw some survey that explicitly said 1-7 is “poor”, 7-8 is “OK”, and 9-10 is “great”. Wild, not sure what the point of the scale is then.

Same with book ratings. Looking at StoryGraph, the average ratings I see is somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5. While I would rate a decent book a 3.

Isn’t that a legitimate use-case for RSS (specifically Atom) though? My blog’s feed just points to the plain-HTML pages with the post. It seems wasteful to put my entire site in a single, polled file.

“Akshually, photo is not a file” is how iOS did it. Blew my mind when I tried to sync my files (Syncthing/Möbius) and it would not show any of the photos in file lists. Apparently it’s for “security reasons”.

This was several years ago so IDK if it’s the same still.

I was always under the impression that the fraudulent intent (outside of extremly blatant cases) would be very difficult to prove in court or otherwise. If a car is used to meet clients or haul some company-related cargo, it is used for business. If a company is a real estate developer, it is expected for them to own and lease residential properties. If the owners’ family members work for the company, they must collect salary. And so on.

A popular scheme I have seen is:

Owner registered and de-facto runs an incorporated Company. Company employs Owner and pays them a small salary (down to state minimum wage even), so Owner minimizes the income tax they pay.

The car Owner drives is owned by the Company for “business purposes”, which allows the car to be operated within 50 miles of the Company (and farther with supplemental insurance). Company counts the car purchase/lease, maintenance, gas as expenses, bringing down the bottom line.

Flights, travel, meals could be paid by the Company, as long as it’s tangentially “business related”.

The house Owner lives in (or several houses for the family) is owned by the Company and is rented to Owner for very cheap, so Company pays the taxes, maintenance, etc, breaking even, or taking a loss on this house. Again, this brings down the company’s bottom line.

Somehow, purchases for a Company can be exempt from sales taxes, too.

In the end, on paper, the Company is barely making any profit, but the Owner might be enjoying a nice car, nice house, and vacations. All for “business purposes” of course. While you pay taxes on your income and purchases like an idiot

.NET applications using .NET Core or later are intended to be cross-platform, so technically, Linux can run .NET apps. (The use-case I know is running .NET sites on Linux servers)

I don’t find it difficult, and have enjoyed sxmo on the PinePhone. I understand the suckless approach, but I do have to admit that many people that I know, even tech-savvy ones, probably would not want to rebuild to configure something.

To configure most suckless tools you need to… recompile them. The readme says:

Because dwm is customized through editing its source code, it’s pointless to make binary packages of it. This keeps its userbase small and elitist. No novices asking stupid questions.

But if you are trying to compile suckless tools, you are already in too deep.

I just installed Miniflux on my server as well.

Advantages (in my opinion) are: Package is in Debian repos (safe and no compilation needed), software is a static binary (thus does not require docker and only needs postgreSQL), documentation is good.

Synapse has seemingly improved since 2020. A word of warning though: if you join large rooms from your server, Synapse will eventually grow the DB to a huge size due to a “lookup” table state_groups_state, and will require manual cleanup. Right before Kung Fury, there was Iron Sky. Moon Nazis, Sarah Palin as the U.S. president, and just generally over the top. Iron Sky 2 was kinda meh.

Revelation Space series does not have FTL, but in its place, an engine that can produce 1G indefinitely (not manufactured anymore, powered by handwavium, it seems… but the secret is revealed in one of the short stories). There is further shenanigans with physics, but never FTL.

It definitely adds more nuance to the world, because now you can’t have interstellar empires if you cannot communicate over large distances.

When I ran prosody a few years ago, I did so without docker.

I did try snikket in docker though, and it looks like it is still actively maintained.

IIRC the Windows version of Midori was the only browser that was light enough to watch Netflix on my ~2005 laptop.

Reminds me of a “minimalist text editor” that my coworker showed me circa 2015. It was an Electron app that consumed more RAM to display a empty file than Firefox with 5 active tabs.
