People are certainly susceptible to Rosy Retrospection, but let’s not forget that 2023’s word of the year was enshittification for a reason!

I’m glad I got caught up in the great exodus when they fucked over the 3rd party app devs. I’d read Reddit with Apollo, and it was mostly passive consumption of the posts and discussions being thrown out there by the faceless masses.

Here, it feels more like having actual discussions with real people, and I started actively participating right away. (Granted, this place isn’t impervious to bots and trolls, but for now it’s a smaller target at least)

I think you’re probably right, but I also suspect that the upvote button avoids a lot of “this” and “you are so right” replies burying the substantive ones. It’s certainly kept me from making low value or redundant replies in the past.

It’s also interesting to occasionally scroll though my post history and see which comments struck a nerve with fellow lemmings. It’s a secondary simplified version of the social interactions and discussions here.

Yeah my first thought was that this looks like an extremely optimistic take drawn by somebody without the issue.

Even having plans AFTER work can mess things up.

You’ll have to spend some of those savings on industrial dehydrators though. It can be very difficult to get the texture of the powder right when you start grinding all willy nilly.

Oh nice. Does your system FINALLY provide enough addreses for every Planck volume in the observable universe? It’s been frickin amateur hour, this internet thing.

Just chilling outside is an underrated activity.

Over the past several years I put a privacy fence around the back yard and built a nice koi pond to sit next to. Sitting there, because of course I have a sittin’ chair now like an old man, is both relaxing on its own and is a great time to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life (even Lemmy!). I often leave my phone in the house, but even when I have it with me it’s become easier to ignore.

For those of us lucky to have the big three mental health issues, it’s a nice self-care treatment for anxiety and depression, and an opportunity to practice controlling my attention. But it’s in addition to my medications, not a replacement for them.

But obviously it’s not the solution for everybody, and not even possible for everybody either. But just getting outside to some natural sights and sounds is what really matters. I’m sure it’s even better if exercise is involved (hiking, etc) but I have legit issues with both heat and sun so I keep my oasis close to my air conditioned home.

You know, just this week I saw the dermatologist again after several years. One of my medications makes me more susceptible to skin cancer and I needed a prescription related to a skin condition refilled.

So I needed to go more than most. I have plenty of other simple things I’ve been waiting months to do, but it IS possible to knock these things out.

AI might actually be better to replace the CEO role than a lot of the individual contributors. If you could train it on the decisions and outcomes of all the companies out there (this if the hard part, admittedly) then it could come up with strategies that produce better results then humans, even if the decisions seem strange.

Maybe it could even be told it has to act ethically! (Share holders enter the chat am I right)

Nope, I’m not sure I even looked for one yet. I don’t need auto sync and/or backup for my work since that’s mostly in GitHub and JIRA and the like. But it’s still convenient to be able to throw a file in there at times.

Insert “use Linux” joke. But I’m absolutely serious when I say that using my company’s M365 stuff using the web versions in Firefox on Linux is pretty pleasant.

Even moreso if you consider the old Latin alphabet that used V and didn’t have U.

Ever since we got the OK to dual boot our machines at work, I’ve been daily driving Mint Cinnamon unapologetically and with no plans to change.

I’m looking to close tickets rather than tinker with my install. It’s nice to start with something fully featured working great out of the box. But it’s still Linux, and based on Debian/Ubuntu at that, so I can run/install/change whatever I want. I don’t feel restricted just because somebody else did a ton of configuration for me before I installed it.

If this were 20 years ago, I’d totally be an Arch/Gentoo user, constantly breaking things and troubleshooting, distro hopping, and all that. But the busy middle aged parent version of me currently speaking is extra grateful for all the effort volunteers (and some companies) have put into making new installs so freaking easy.
