    Yeah.

I left beehaw because they seem determined to build a echo chamber too

A minority literally accused of me of wanting to kill all of them simply because I only half agreed with a post.

And then a admin overlooked that, and accused me of causing a fight in a “safe space” which seems to be just another term for echo chamber

I have friends from that minority 😂

Johns problem is generally that he’s insecure and needs a scape goat because he can’t accept responsibility for his fuck ups.

So he picks a few minorities to target so he doesn’t need to acknowledge that he fucked around too much in high school or did too many drugs.

He doesn’t even need to be a majority, because there will always be someone else to blame

  • It’s not a common scenario probably.

But I felt at least one admin was so focused on protecting at least 1 minority, that they were willing to overlook bad behavior by some of them. Or maybe they knew that if they told them to act better that the community would see them as a threat

In fact, the person who exclaimed that I “wanted to kill the entire minority” simply because I didn’t 100% agree with one thing also I realized colored my opinion early of the rest of Lemmy on another thread by calling it a cesspool

It’s actually the opposite. People are free to discuss on other servers, and I realize that lots of the thing that person was saying, was actually bad for discussions except in a way that benefits them directly (even disregarding other people in their minority).

The crazy part is I have plenty of friends who are part of that minority lol

They were a mod too, so over time, some of these communities will only develop stronger and stronger opinions which are self reinforcing and rise to the top in these safe spaces and basically become another femaledatingstrategy like environment

  • I’ve heard evidence that it was a fairly toxic community there anyway.

We should be careful to avoid creating communities that are echo chambers. Ie, it should be a community discussing veganism, not a vegan safe space where people abuse you if you disagree

Otherwise, in 5 years time you end to with scenarios similar to reddit or on beehaw

I left beehaw because I half agreed with the community, someone in a “safe space” abused me, and a beehaw admin overlooked that abuse and instead insisted I was starting a flight (simply because I didn’t 100% agree with the community it seemed)

We also risk scenarios where vaping or drug communities could grow and become toxic in the same way. We also should be as scientific as possible and avoid becoming Facebook.

I’m not sure about the cat thing, but to me, it seems like it could at least be used as animal abuse

  • I never saw the thread, but based on what I’m hearing, it’s animal abuse.

If you look at Reddit and Facebook they’ve both been mostly consumed by anti science communities which put people in real danger

We see communities like this create an echo chamber which grows and make it impossible to argue sanely.

The fact is, I have seen some increasingly toxicity in some vegan (and some other) communities on Lemmy too. And it is one reason why I left beehaw. Because they allow toxic communities to flourish (as long as they were driven by a minority).

I’d even go as far as the behavior of some of these communities look like femaledatingadvice/thedonald on Reddit slowly. It’s ok to have disagreements, but nobody and no animals should be put at risk.

  • Yes, bias is a thing. Ever hear of the placebo effect? It gives people a bias before clicking the link.

In fact, showing rankings actually makes it easier for bots because of that bias, they just randomly click stuff to appear neutral, and upvote their target posts, which when they say +1.4k, you’ll be biased into thinking it’s a popular opinion. Hence why hiding them by default actually maybe has benefits. There are no advantages to seeing the votes other than abuse. Name some.

As you said, they’re already accessible, so there is no point of bloating the code. Let’s not make them even more so and encourage abuse.

What problem is being solved here by doing this?

  • My implementation would be hide it from the UI by default for instances

Also, never said unranked… I meant simply hide the rankings. Part of the disadvantage of showing the totals on the UI means that high upvotes make it seem like it was highly popular. It also means that people don’t mindlessly upvote posts simply because there were a lot of upvotes. By hiding them, you know its popular, but no how popular. It changes the way people interact so it’s more normal.

Showing Upvotes/downvotes doesn’t show whether they are bots are not. It just means they’ll upvote/downvote more random shit and mess around wit the rest of the posts, so more crap rises to the top because they’re interfering with the rankings.

There are easier ways to identify bots… And, it just aids abusive people. I don’t think it will assist with bots at all… Sorry.

  • Something tells me that you’re not at fault…

We have similar extremist dickheads here similar to trump (but Trump helps give them power too).

And yeah… It’s absolutely clear trump won’t change his behavior. That became clear after he had a second judgement filed against him for defamation by E Jean Carroll, and he can likely be sued a 3rd time successfully. He really is dumb as dog ****. Could have spent the rest of his life playing golf lying about his profitability. Instead he chose to offend half of the country, and draw attention to himself and his crimes by bragging
