Diamond Age is my all time favourite (although I read it just one time as I do with all books). In the current age of AI it is very relevant. If nano technology and AI will progress we’ll maybe head into the depicted scenario and I hope I’m still alive then.
Cryptonomicon, Anathem, The Baroque Cycle are wild rides and masterpieces too. Anathem was a bit hard to get into but it got really exciting after the first 300 pages (of ~1000) or so.
I did not read that book of Calvino (nor have I heard his name) but there exists a free game on steam called “If on a winter’s night four travelers” with very positive reviews which seems to be inspired by the book.
I only read “The Left Hand of Darkness”. That novell was fire (no pun intended). Excellent world building and super captivating and immersive writing.
I had ONE hick-up with Nvidia drivers on arch in about 6 years. I needed to downgrade them initially when Valve released the new Steam UI. That’s been fixed pretty fast. When I’m thinking back it was the only problem I had with arch upgrades in its entirety apart from one that was completely on me: installing KWinFT which completely messed up some system libraries (but was repairable). Arch was nothing but rock solid stable for me.
The browser login of my bank needs a separate application that’s windows only or an app. The Java(!) application Jameica saved my ass for the 6 years I’m on Linux now. It can manage multiple accounts. It offers statistics, saves all the transfers, deposits and balances ad infinitum on your disk, is searchable and has templates and schedules for transfers.
The protocol my bank uses is FinTS, I think. I’m logging in via a certificate file and a password.
I don’t want to use an app, cause I trust my cutting edge Linux (Kernel 6.7.6) a lot more than my possibly malicious app riddled outdated android.
I hope you can accept my apology. I just was in a very agravated mood because of all the ignorance on xitter. We’re try trying to make people less dumb there on multiple fronts and I think we starting to reach people in the last days and they change their stance.
I never watched IT Crowd, but I’m a big fan of Always Sunny, The Office and Arrested Development. I hope there’ll be times when I can enjoy those again and be in a better mood.

So you must taste greeeeat despite all the antibiotics and microplastics in your body.
Don’t know anything avout xorg development although I’m profitting for years off it now. Just wanted to chime in and say that the Arch maintainers put out updates pretty constantly. If the code isn’t worked on anymore then what’s happening there?
Edit: There is definitely happening stuff with the xorg-server code.
Edit: Removed chit-chat
Nice. I started Ratchet & Clank on PCSX2 yesterday. Holy hell is that Emulator a work of art. The graphical options for the emu make that PS2 game still shine and the gameplay is lotsa fun. Sadly the libretro core for Retroarch/Emulationstation bugged out for me and was slow compared to standalone PCSX2.
Also I’m still puzzled how it’s possible there are so many retro-achievements for so many games. I looked up how to implement them and it’s really complicated. I totally underestimated how big the retro games scene still is. I really want to get into the netplay thing.
Then it must’ve been bad luck. I had plenty more over the course of a few month with a CS GO server and it wasn’t the game server because I often couldn’t login via SSH or the session just froze. And I definitely took precautions with a firewall, fail2ban and no root, no password only certificate SSH login (a tried and tested combination of measurements I use on plenty other ionos VPS).
You’re right the webinterface doesn’t really matter but the overall impression was much more professional on ionos with a slick interface for the config of the hw firewall.
I had not so good experiences with Contabo lately. Lot of outages and they withdrew 2 more month after the end of my subscription. Ionos had no outtages so far (5th month). In addition their web interface is better than Contabos.
KDE? You tried “Systemsettings > Power Management > Energy Saving > Dim Screen” maybe already? I don’t have what you’re describing either und Arch nor Endeavor.
Someone in the comments to the original twitter-thread showed the Claude solution for above “riddle”. It was equally sane as in your example, correctly answered that the man and the goat can just row together to the other side and correctly identified that there are no hidden restrictions like other items to take aboard. It nevertheless used an excessive amount of text (like myself here).
Gemini: The man rows the goat across.
