Sperm whales rattle off pulses of clicks while swimming together, raising the possibility that they’re communicating in a complex language.

Ever since the discovery of whale songs almost 60 years ago, scientists have been trying to decipher their lyrics. Are the animals producing complex messages akin to human language? Or sharing simpler pieces of information, like dancing bees do? Or are they communicating something else we don’t yet understand?
In 2020, a team of marine biologists and computer scientists joined forces to analyze the click-clacking songs of sperm whales, the gray, block-shaped leviathans that swim in most of the world’s oceans. On Tuesday, the scientists reported that the whales use a much richer set of sounds than previously known, which they called a “sperm whale phonetic alphabet.”
People have a pho-ne-tic alphabet too, which we use to produce a practically infinite supply of words. But Shane Gero, a marine biologist at Carleton University in Ottawa and an author of the study, said it’s unclear whether sperm whales similarly turn their phonetic sounds into a language.
“The fundamental similarities that we do find are really fascinating,” Dr. Gero said. “It’s totally changed the way we have to do work going forward.”
Since 2005, Dr. Gero and his colleagues have followed a clan of 400 sperm whales around Dominica, an island nation in the eastern Caribbean, eavesdropping on the whales with u

Well I remember the Sony XCP rootkit scandal, and that is 2 decades ago.
My cat licks its nose when he wants to eat.
‘where’s the food human? I am going to sit here in front of you, do a stare contest and shlorp shlorp my nose…’
Chicken filet plain cooked and shredded into thin strips. I make it for Surinam Bami and always give the cat some. When I make bami he is always close on the lookout for his share. It is gone in seconds, eats like a hungry dog.
Also chicken livers cooked and finely chopped or puréed.
Normally he eats BARF…hehe.
Because that is what I observe, there is no joke or silly thing in here to me.
We have people with Malamutes more than half a kilometer away. I only learned what Malamutes where after I asked my wife wtf that noise was all the time…they are not mutes at all.
Heheh…Yeah, I never said gaming PC, the last build was a Linux machine with a RX470 and i5 4460 for an autistic boy who is into programming and tinkering with Linux distributions. Also needed it for school work. Thrown out by his parents, lonely, assisted living in a small room, so we got him a coffee machine, water cooker and microwave, and when he is here I always cook him a good meal. Thin as a leaf, eats two plates full, smears my herb butter on both sides of the bread.
He is a good friend of my son who is also autistic.
The build before was a Ryzen 5 with a GTX 1060 and an old Wacom tablet for a girl who can really paint great manga type art, her old PC took 20 minutes to start, which I fixed and gave to the guy I mentioned before. Her dad died, mom doesn’t have much, again pc needed for school work.
My charities are in my neighbourhood, like your friendly spiderman.
Like cooking for the less fortunate, giving kids my abandoned PC stuff, building together their new rig, supplying food packets to fams in need, like with the “to good to go” program here in the Netherlands. Supplying local food banks.
I have been homeless for a long time and now I share what I consider a very fat bank account. I certainly knew how to share when I had nothing, makes one humble, makes one appreciate rain on the window, or a shower whenever you want one. I got served a patato soup and a glass of port after eating nothing walking around hungry for days by a guy who had himself nothing, engraved in my mind.
We got all we need now and then some… Why not see a problem at close and solve it right there. I am surely not giving Bob Geldof any money, fuck that guy.
My friend has a French Bulldog. Dog Henry has a great personality but he should have no offspring as he is in constant peril for air because breeders thought money. It is heart wrenching to look at.
Off course that dog is uncomfortable, it is miserable and should not exist. Skull too small for it’s brain, just look at its eyes popping out of its skull. Still humans think it so cute. Some dog breeds should not exist. I feel sorry for it.
You are a kind person taking her in and taking care, she made a good choice staying. She looks somewhat older to me (10+) looking at her face. Ours is 17 now, kind to everyone and still in reasonable health, limbs are getting a bit stiff though.
Off course, that’s just the way it is. The cat living with us always needs the snuggles.
How old is your cat if I may ask?
Yeah this is pretty fucked up, looks like bigotry to me
Excuse me for reacting this late.
Taking out enemies with cameras, gadgets and traps in an open world is pretty nice. Gameplay a bit different in every game.
The story in the first one, wasn’t that interesting to me and a lot of reviewers talked about how wooden Aiden Pierces personality was. Also suicidal killer cop cars that will run over everyone and everything to get to you, hehe.
Second game is different in story and setting (San Francisco), mechanics and controls slightly different. I liked it, but again not for the story, same with the third, where everyone talks in street slang bruv…but the open world, stealth, drones, puzzles and hacking made me sink 60 hours into that game. Haven’t played the DLC for Legion, one can play Aiden Pierce, but I am not sure it is worth the price, even at discount.
Yeah I wondered how I could register the same username for kbin social and kbin earth. Which Rick am I talking to? The pickle one? Anyone can assume your identity
I liked all three games and I hope they continue. I think I liked the first game best, Legion the least but I still enjoyed it.
It’s nice to see a movie based in Chicago as a guy from the Netherlands and say, hey I have been there in Watch Dogs
