Not quite. I think you may be referring to their genome transplant. They used a natural cell and completely replaced the original genome with synthesized DNA. Whereas this project did not rely on existing cellular machinery.

That’s a reasonable design. The result would be interesting and may raise more questions than it answers. That is a good thing.

I don’t think this design would conclusively prove they were engaging in abstract communication, but that would take many experiments of similar scope.

A sceptic could say the unconditioned group reaction was a result of social awareness of the reaction of the conditioned crows. Sort of a collective freak out based on the immediate reaction of the marked individuals.

My own journey out has been incredibly painful and challenging but that is MY life path, not his. He stuck with my mother for 25 years to the very end after her Parkinsons diagnosis and he got to watch her choke to death on some food at the end.

This is sad news. He was deeply influential and at the same time a somewhat obscure author. At least, in my experience, he didn’t have the name recognition other - dare I say lesser - authors had.

One lesson I learned as a young person from reading A Fire Upon the Deep was to never believe anything just because it was on the internet. That alone makes his legacy worth remembering.

It’s great as a mental prosthetic. When I am tackling a new complex topic like say a new cloud platform I’m learning, i can test my understanding of the implications of a change to the console settings. I tell it what i think and ask it to check my understanding. Really speeds up my learning, but I don’t rely on it exclusively. I will write my own dang emails, thank you.

I’m going to try to revive a dead post by commenting on my own experiences playing. Based on the upvotes, others seem interested too. Let’s see if it works

I had a good crew of friends while in grad school in the 00’s. This was a super smart crew of bio-nerds so when I heard about this game on Slashdot (or maybe Memepool, can’t be sure) I knew I had the right crowd to try it.

It was a successful session and we developed a lot of those inside jokes that tight social groups do.

I tried again years later with another set of friends and it fell flat. Not a disaster but it was quickly abandoned for lack of general interest. This was also a crowd of high-wattage personalities so i still wonder what the difference was.

That’s what prompted my question. Just seeking scene setting tips that might increase the chance the game goes well again.
