I switched over to Proton from Gmail about 8-10 months ago and it’s been great so far. Folders and filters have been like what I was used to. The only thing I haven’t played around with much is calendar and invites.

Instead of mandatory military service like some countries have, people should have mandatory public work for two years. Whether it be labor, clerical/administrative, etc, it could help young people learn a new skill, get guaranteed work to get the started, and could potentially save a ton in taxes. It would also create the opportunity to start getting caught up some things that keep getting swept under the rug like bridge maintenance , etc.

This is crazy and scary. I had no idea a system like that existed.

Cool to see Godot used for tools like this. It has the capability to be more than just a game engine. Especially with the UI tools it includes.

I used to use the prepaid approach a lot, but recently it seems like some companies are rejecting them. Mainly seeing it happen with subscription based services.

At my last company, we used the scaled TBD. For personal projects I do the same. It’s honestly really nice. Not having to worry about merging issues between a dev branch and main branch was probably the biggest benefit. The code base also felt more accessible to the team. Cherry-picking a particular commit that a teammate worked on that’s been merged but I needed on my feature/bug branch was also painless.

I understand your point. But science has also shown us over time that things we thought were magic were actually things we can figure out. Consciousness is definitely up there in that category of us not fully understanding it. So what might seem like magic now, might be well-understood science later.

Not able to provide links at the moment, but there are also examples on the other side of the argument that lead us to think that maybe consciousness isn’t fully tied to physical components. Sure, the brain might interface with senses, consciousness, and other parts to give us the whole experience as a human. But does all of that equate to consciousness? Is the UI of a system the same thing as the user?

Consciousness might not even be “attached” to the brain. We think with our brains but being conscious could be a separate function or even non-local.

Not sure if you work from home, but if so, canned chicken can go a long way. You can make quick quesadillas, chicken salads, make rice the day or morning before and mix that with some sautéed canned chicken with olive oil and seasonings of your choice.

Another quick go to for me is gluten free nuggets and chicken patties. IMO they’re even tastier than the other common options. A little pricier though but well worth it.

Obsidian is great. I use my iCloud storage to store the vault and access it from any of my Apple devices. There’s also some really neat plugins.

I know it doesn’t help you now, but Apollo used to have a feature where you can save your posts in folders. Used that feature all the time. Maybe one of the Lemmy apps can implement something similar.

Sounds like either they’re just being lazy and trying to avoid generating a privacy policy, or they’re up to no good and trying to be vague on purpose. I lean towards the former.

If they don’t have ads, that means there would be no cookie tracking which is what I think they’re trying to explain. But if they have login available, they might still use cookies to remember who you are.

Privacy policies can be generated in a few minutes online. And nowadays with GDPR, you would think it’s a no brainer to properly let your users know what you’re collecting.

I think the same can be said for a lot of fields. E.g., just because someone’s an excellent architect doesn’t make them a good animator by default.

There’s also so many variations on the types of programming. Maybe a mathematician might be better suited for data science rather than frontend stuff. And even then, each person is different and has their own set of skills part from whatever their formal training is.

What I think makes good programmers is having the ability to bash your head against your desk while debugging, but still walking away at the end of the day loving the job and problem solving. Persistence and creativity go a long way in programming.

Yeah I get that. But sometimes in the chase for wringing more money out of customers, companies hire a bunch of people in anticipation for the moves they’re making. Then they have to fall back on their decisions and laborers pay in the end like you mentioned.

All I’m saying is better that then them trying to shoehorn in more changes that’ll piss off the game dev community even more and result in even bigger layoffs.

IMO, I hope engines like Godot which I really enjoy eat up some of Unity’s market share. I know this isn’t a popular opinion. Just my observation from working with various companies of different sizes.

Not trying to defend in the least bit Unity after their runtime fee debacle, but maybe this is a good first step towards realizing how they can provide their products without screwing over their customers.

I get layoffs suck, but sometimes, companies get a bit bloated out of eagerness to provide a bunch of services and products and need to tone it down a bit.

No I feel the same way. I think it’s because it’s part of an ecosystem of concepts built with all its predecessors mistakes in mind. There’s still learning to do but the foundation is simple but is also modern.
