  • Just in general villages aren’t sustainable, even on flat ground. They will absolutely get overrun by zombies within a few nights unless the player intervenes.

Also, if i recall correctly, the butcher’s hut has their smoker generate with a solid block above it; this is a problem because villagers can’t use job site blocks that have a solid block above them. So this butcher eventually becomes a regular villager.

So in a few different ways, villages as they are generated are unsustainable. And there’s too many of them, there’s an argument that the world feels way too populated where the vibe of Minecraft’s world once was sheer solitude

  • I do have a backup laptop, which does come in handy for the rare case of, for example, making a new install.

But yeah, i feel like a laptop is an awkward middle ground between a phone and a desktop. It’s not as powerful and has a small screen, but it’s also not as portable as my phone.

Granted if i travelled more i would need a laptop, and then i would have a dock of some kind at home to extend its capabilities (USB hub, second monitor, etc)

  • See the thing is i’m not worldly enough to know what common animals in my country are uncommon in other countries. I mean there’s some mallards here and there, the ones with the green head just like the meme, are those exotic and surprising? Oh, my old hometown has swans. They’re surprisingly aggressive.

What i will say though is that i definitely feel that way about architecture. I quite like the winding medieval back alley leading to a church built in 980 (as in the year), it’s cool; but Americans will have a spiritual experience over it because no building in the US is that old.

  • Also streamers were a lot more influential on place 22 and 23 than they were in 17. Streamers are external to the website, don’t particularly have a dog in the race other than themselves, are encouraged to create spectacle, and the kind of personality that makes you a big streamer is not conducive to being a good neighbor in a competitive pixel art game. So while i hesitate to say that there was anything about Reddit in particular that made Place 2017 a good event, i do think the presence of streamers made 22 and 23 much worse.

  • I felt a duty to not only place pixels but also coordinate efforts. Picking the design, updating the design, spreading information so the people placing pixels know what’s going on, advertising, talking to other communities…

I don’t remember them very well but i’m pretty sure i’ve had 4 hour nights for the entire duration. For place 2023 i spent most of my waking time in Discord calls.

And all this for a game that can be emotionally devastating. Getting overrun by a streamer feels shockingly similar to having big kids trample your sand castle, it’s this little thing that you built together getting destroyed by stronger people and they’re mocking you relentlessly.

  • I’m not sure how much moderators could even do.

I was actually there so my view of events is pretty biased, but watching mods get removed from their position and replaced with more complying people made me think that the power dynamic was insurmountable. Regardless of how much free labor they perform, moderators don’t actually get bargaining power in return, Reddit employees untimately are above them to defend the company’s interests. Realistically, the function of a Reddit mod is to spare admins the grunt work of ground-level moderation decisions.

  • I only install what i need so i haven’t actually installed a lot of apps. The copout answer is Firefox, but if i’m taking the prompt seriously it would be Simple Keyboard or Floris Board, they’re highly customizeable keyboards that i really enjoy and i have a hard time deciding which to leave installed.

Just in general though, browsing F-Droid feels so good. I’m in a much simpler mindset where i’ll think “oh that’s neat i want to try it”, which is how i used to feel about tech. Browsing PlayStore makes me think “that’s neat, but what’s the catch? How are they going to scam me/harvest my data? I’m not installing this”
