Well, I like gnome a lot. However, COSMIC’s ability to color windows is better imo. It has a different control/settings app. And everything, so far, feels built in. Not just packaging it with an existing app.
It’s made with rust, so it’s theoretically faster. It’s NEW and doesn’t have legacy requirements.
However, its ability to customize is not as great as gnome… for ME, that’s a plus. I want something that keeps a consistent look and feel. I don’t need to (forgive the phrase) “rice” my DE.
It’s still in alpha, but you can get a pop_os! ISO with it and run it in a VM to check it out.
If you like gnome though, for newer hardware, you should keep an eye on COSMIC. It’s gnome-like, and has the potential to beat it.
Well, it’s best for older hardware. I think a laggy experience is worse than a fast one with a simple DE
It’s very fast on older hardware. Leaves out a lot of the modern transitions. Very simple start menu style browsing. Minimal customization options. And mint itself is very stable and comes with a good set of default software. Almost no command line needed
Cinnamon, I would argue, is better than gnome (for new users). And while I wouldn’t suggest mint for the long haul because it doesn’t plan to implement Wayland for a while, it’s still the fastest and most compatible one out of the box
Linux mint is still probably the best option for new users who don’t want to use a command line.
I do love the oatmeal, but everything he does now is just for money. He’s probably just got a team of writers at this point.
