Nobody in the EU would have cared if the commercial app market wasn’t dominated by Apple. Plenty of devices out there don’t let you install random stuff off the internet but if the market dominance isn’t there, the EU won’t care.

Also I don’t think just revenue some us the only Barometer for a monopoly. If something has very few users but had really high prices that they’re willing to pay for them by your metric they’d be closer to a monopoly than steam

Given the massive popularity of Fortnite, I wouldn’t bet if Steam has a higher installed base than EGS. People just prefer to buy on Steam.

Steam is not a monopoly. The vast majority of PC gaming revenue is made outside Steam. Fortnite: EGS only, not on Steam. Minecraft: own web storefront and Microsoft Store, not on Steam. Roblox: I think it has its own storefront, it’s not on Steam.

Steam has an estimated revenue of 8.6bn out of PC gaming’s overall 45bn. It’s very far from even approaching 50%, let alone surpass it.

I don’t mind other storefronts. What I mind is people spreading the false narrative as if one of the most widely installed storefronts (EGS because of Fortnite) is somehow the little underdog.

Valve already does cloud gaming. It’s called Steam Cloud Play (not to be confused with cloud saves) and they currently work exclusively with GeForce Now.

So when I log onto Lemmy on PC and I see a dozen of reports having popped up about posts being reported as being “in bad faith”, posts that may be genuinely idiotic but not containing any personal attacks / racism /…, I’m already checking out. Not every idiotic posts needs moderator intervention. Sometimes a minus 25 score is enough. So when there are a dozen of reports about merely idiotic posts, I might miss a genuinely intervention-worthy one.

Threads is already part of the Fediverse but on a per-account basis. It’s compatible with Mastodon and other Twitter-likes that use ActivityPub. Lemmy can’t read Threads posts, just as Lemmy can’t read random Mastodon posts, only the ones Mastodon users explicitly posted into Lemmy communities.

So the variation cannot be used. That’s irrelevant for a file format. Some company could, for example, patent a more efficient encoding technique but the resulting file format is still public domain. So at worst an open source encoder would need to be slightly inefficient because it uses the traditional technique.

No, sadly it won’t. Its time is over. There was a window of opportunity when Calligra’s good separation of UI and logic would have made it a good foundation for a web office suite and the desktop version would have benefitted as a side effect. That niche as been taken over by OnlyOffice. I fear its future lies in being a plugin for document viewer Okular.

Expanding? Calligra/KOffice predates LibreOffice/OpenOffice, it just lost on mind share because the Gnome fanatics hate anything KDE more than the messiest OpenOffice spaghetti code.

Even the launch version of HL1 was a great game but gosh, were Valve a crappy company back then. HL1 shipped with a bunch of trailers, so far, so good. But update patches contained mandatory new trailers. That was dialup era and downloading the updates cost much more money because of those stupid trailers. Then came Steam and made it worse. Imagine the pushback to ads in Windows 10 but add to the annoyance the fact that the annoyances also cost money. Broadband was still just getting started. My family certainly couldn’t afford it and they could even less so afford me being online on dialup all the time. So my more wealthy friend passed me CDs with the last non-Steam updates, mods like Counter Strike. Me having been a dumb kid would have ruined my family’s livelihood otherwise.

Personally, I dislike that Nobara is relying on patched Mesa and kernel versions. This is unnecessary risk of instability. AFAIK Bazzite doesn’t do that.
