$1000 to someone with $100,000 is like $1,000,000 to someone with $100,000,000. To make your point you’d have to do it backwards: $1000 to someone with $100,000,000 is like $1 to someone with $100,000.

Heat transfer works both ways - so if they feel you as cold then you’d feel them as warm. In my experience dogs usually don’t stand out to me as being particularly warm so I’d guess their fur is a good enough insulator to prevent much heat transfer during normal casual contact. It’s been a few months though, maybe I’ve just forgotten how warm the embrace of a dog is.

At least in the US, I think the jury’s still out on how history will view X/Y/Z’s handling of the climate, because… the boomers are still handling it. Once the government starts to be mostly non-boomers, I think we’ll probably see an enormous shift in that sort of policy.

The caption opened off-screen for me and I was convinced it was a mummified mouse or baby squirrel before I read it.

Is this actually true? Rowling herself aside, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an openly transphobic Harry Potter fan - granted I also don’t spend a huge amount of time in Harry Potter forums and stuff.

I played both. Both are excellent games, and both also have flaws.

I think Zelda was by far the better game - HL isn’t really on the same level as it at all, design-wise, story-wise, or or in terms of things to do.

HL’s strength is definitely the world itself - the Hogwarts and Hogsmeade areas in particular are both incredibly well done and very faithful to the source material. The other areas are just alright.

I’d say HL’s weaknesses become most apparent if you’re a completionist. Things can get very repetitive if you’re going for 100%. I did, and I honestly think you’ll like it a lot more if you just don’t.

It’s still lots of fun though. Zelda was my most played game in 2023 and HL was kind of far behind, and everything else combined would still probably be a distant third.

I absolutely agree with the other people saying HL is generic and propped up by the IP. But for me that was enough.

It’s also a day without using anything he learned in art, or geography, or chemistry, or English literature, or history, or pretty much anything he studied in school after age 10. Why does math get singled out?

For the curious/lazy: The top one is correct. The bottom one is exactly 1.4 miles’ worth of kilometers.

If you remove “Undetermined” as a language on your profile, then all the unlabeled foreign language content should stop showing up for you. The problem is that all the unlabeled English content would also stop showing up for you, then. That’s why having “Undetermined” be the default option is not good - it only makes the problem worse.

One that’s gotten me a few times is if you’re typing a reply to someone, either in the comments or a PM, then mid-typing you upvote (or downvote) them (or anyone else), it deletes your comment-in-progress. I’ve lost a few comments that way, one of which took about 20 minutes to write which I just gave up on and didn’t post afterward.

I also really don’t like that the default language option is “Undetermined”. It makes not labeling the correct language the default behavior, which makes a lot of foreign language material show up in my feed. Your own post and 2 of the 4 comments at the time of me posting are unlabeled.

Some things that made me happy this year:

• My best friend has some issues that occasionally make interacting with them difficult. This year I got a lot better at handling those moments in a more graceful way, which has led to less stress for (hopefully) both of us.
• I got a lot better at handling my time in a productive way this year.
• I made a lot of big steps toward significantly changing my work situation in a way that I’m hopeful will turn out for the better.

And some games I enjoyed playing this year include Hogwarts Legacy, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pico Park with my niece, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Crash Bandicoot 2 (From the trilogy game), Super Mario Wonder, Stray, and Manifold. I 100%'d all of those except Zelda and Manifold (Which I’m still playing).

Hard call for me between Horizon Zero Dawn and either Spider-Man game since I’ve had both on my radar for a while, but I’ll go in for Spider-Man Remastered 🕷🕸 Happy Holidays ♡

Kids these days are so spoiled

Any insect that touches my skin realizes the error of its ways and peacefully leaves me alone.

Gonna go with Firefox as both my most-used piece of open-source software, and the software I see as most important to its ecosystem. If Firefox fails then we’ve just got Chromium-based browsers and, I guess, Safari.

I’m having an easier time sticking to it and not visiting reddit than I thought I would. The first day was pretty sketchy with 90% of the posts being about Lemmy, reddit, or twitter - but since then it’s been giving a more enjoyable experience.

It probably helps that I’m making an effort to post and comment, which I never really did on reddit.

As Lemmy grows I’d like to see more niche communities take off, similar to how there was “a subreddit for everything”.

I do have a big wishlist for site functionality changes though. A big sore spot is that youtube videos and text posts can’t open in-line on the front page.
