Hello Lemmy!
It’s been almost 6 months since I last posted here, and the reception here on Lemmy for our game has been awesome. We have another Wave going on right now, and also I have created a community here on lemmy as well (!walkscape@lemmy.world) where I’ve been posting all of the development blogs and updates.
We have Wave 4 now on-going, and it’s running until 8th of June. If you want to gain direct access to the game, you can support the development or you can also apply for free beta access.
Since last post, we’ve added quite a lot of new content, including an entirely new skill, and adding support for smart watches on iOS, which has been one of the most frequently requested features. Support for smart watches on Android is coming later on as well!
If you haven’t heard about the game before, I started this project as a personal hobby project to help myself walk more. I tried most of the games available, but I wanted to have something that didn’t need attention while walking and wouldn’t have predatory monetization like most mobile games tend to have these days.
The game is inspired by RuneScape, and you level up skills, craft gear, find loot and so on by walking IRL. We have a short introduction video to the game where I explain and show how the game works in more detail. The video is a bit outdated nowadays, but fundamentals of the game are still the same.
We’ve also updated our roadmap to the game just few days ago, as we’re now switching our focus to finish up the big three remaining features after which we can launch the open beta.
Thanks again Lemmy for all the support we’ve gained from here. The feedback has also been awesome, and the encouragement we’ve had from your comments have meant a lot to all of us working on the game!
I’ll be answering all comments, feedback and questions here. Stay hydrated and keep walking everyone! <3
I heard about this on Reddit, glad to see it has made its way to the Fediverse. I am curious what you are using to develop this, since I’ve also been interested in making my own personal walking app (not going to be competition, only ever intended to release to myself and maybe a few friends).
For development, I’m using my own game engine that I have built on top of Flutter. For servers, we are using our own soltuions that have been programmed with Dart language as well. I like to do everything myself :D
I’ve been playing for a while! I love the game! Thanks for all your hard work!
Hey so I’m trying to sign up and a) your password field doesn’t let me type spaces, just doesn’t register them at all and b) getting client side errors when I submit. I’d love to check it out, but having issues with the site. On Firefox.
been playing WalkScape for a while and I like it, it definitely gets me out walking more!
Where’d you get the little 3-d town pic from OP i haven’t seen that in game!
Thanks for making it!
here’s my little Jarvonian worker bee
Our artist is recreating all of the in-game locations in isometric style, and our plan is to soon-ish start to implement these into the game itself. Creating all of the 40+ locations takes some time for our artist, especially these city locations.
And thank you so much ❤️
that’s so cool I can’t wait to see it!
I’ve been playing since August and it’s a great game. It helps keep me exercising too, sometimes you just gotta go for a walk to chop some logs or something.
Heard about this on Reddit.
In the last two months I’ve been walking a lot more (aiming for 30K steps over day, although my average has been closer to 20K).
Will have to check this out.
Highly recommended. It’s unintrusive and fast, and you only have to check it now and then to switch up your activity. Every time I go for a run or get groceries, I look forward to what I’ve found in game :D
Hey, thanks for the game, got accepted recently and have been really enjoying it.
Sadly I’ve just come 3rd in the parents race at my kids sports day at the cost of pulling my calf muscle so it look like I’ll not be getting many steps in over the next few days.
Keep up the great work, I’m looking forward to see how it progresses.Thank you so much, and that sucks! But prioritizing recovery is the key, WalkScape isn’t a sprint but a marathon, so there are a lot of opportunities to get more steps in once you’ve recovered your calf muscle <3
I was accepted into the beta, but I’m unable to find the app in the store. I joined the google group, but I’m not sure what else to check. When I follow the link it shows the app in the browser, but when I try to find it with the play store app it can’t be found. Any ideas?
Make sure that you’re logged into Google Play with the same google account you joined the Group with. If you have more than one google account, this is very likely the cause of the issue.
Thanks for the reply! PEBKAC issue – I was logged in with the right account, but the email I requested to join the beta from was not a google account so I had to make one for this. I forgot to change the email in my Walkscape account portal to the gmail I made. All good now!
I haven’t been accepted (yet, fingers crossed) into the beta but just wanted to say that this is such a cool project! Good on you for making and sharing it!
Thank you so much! When did you apply to the Closed Beta? We did accept before the current wave practically everyone who had applied before it launched.
If you applied long time ago, make sure to check out https://portal.walkscape.app/account page if you already have got the access but missed the email.
Well I think I’m just an idiot… I signed up for an account I think when I saw your very first post about it here. But I don’t think I ever actually submitted the beta application since I overlooked there was more than just signing up. 🤦♂️
Either way, I’m all set now since I just decided to donate instead.
This is a cool project, glad to see things are still progressing. Is there an option for manually adding activities (like cycling or workouts), or is it solely based on the step counter of the phone?
Thank you! There is no option for that yet, but cycling basically does work if you have your phone in your pocket, or you use your watch on iOS in what we call “ankle monitor” mode. Current thinking is that we want to keep it steps based, but proper cycling support is planned. Manually adding activities likely won’t be a thing other than maybe in the single player mode, as that could be abused by players way too easily.
It didn’t cross my mind that people would play themselves that way but that totally makes sense
