So I’ve tried both, and they both work, but with different effects. The dex is the only thing that helps with executive function, that kick start to actually initiate tasks. But Ritalin is more effective in muting the mental noise which helps me stay focused longer. It also helps me regulate my emotions much better. I have young kids and life gets hectic, so ritalin helps be keep my cool in this moments. But I’m reluctant to give up the Dex (what I’m currently prescribed) because I need it most work days to get things moving.
I wonder if anyone has the same experience and whether they’ve managed to work with their prescriber to use both on lower doses?
Not entirely identical, but I know what you mean.
I was on long release dex combo (Adderall) for a while and it gave me the “drive” like you mentioned. But it screwed with my sleep and I had to get away from it since I reacted badly to the fillers in generics. I also found certain formulations wore off fast and left me with the infamous “ADHD crash” and made my afternoons and nights miserable. This is down to individual brain chemistry, though.
On a long release Ritalin now and my brain is quiet too. I don’t necessarily get the “reward” from starting or finishing tasks and have to push myself to initiate but once the process is started I’m okay.
For comparison unmedicated the whole thing is like walking through glass barefoot and soaking my feet in lemon juice after.
You might be able to get a dual script, depending on where you live. Like have Dex first thing in the AM, then short acting Ritalin later in the day to keep even. Only way to know is to ask your psych.
You lucky son of a bitch.
What is dex? When i searched it seems slang for dysexecutive function not a med
Normally short for Dexamfetamine (depending on your country) lisdexamfetamine is a long release version which your body breaks down into dexamfetamine over a longer period eg. One a day vs multiple tabs multiple times a day.
I’m guessing they mean dextroamphetamine
Or maybe lisdexamphetamine?
I assume dexmethylphenidate, it’s related to but a slightly different chemical structure vs Ritalin. I’m surprised to see someone use them together given they’re so similar
Though reading the other comment I’ve learned dextroamphetamine is also a thing, I wonder if that’s the chemical structure equivalent for amphetamines/adderal
Dextroamphetamine is an isomer of amphetamine, marketed under the trade name Dexedrine, commonly shortened to Dex among recreational users, presumably also so among people actually using for ADHD
