I know that lemmy’s moto is if you don’t like it here make your own, but for communities with big sub numbers and where current event discussions happens. banning controversial political opinions is not what I would have expected from the fediverse after having left corporate media, which could be excused for having to answer to investors and what not!

After I got a comment banned for what I think is nothing else but controversial, where it received quite the same amount of upvotes and downvotes, I took a look at that community’s mod log, and there is nothing to be cheerful about. the same reddit mods have made it to the fediverse and are trying to turn it into the same hive mind other social media are, it is a shame it is turning out to this.

Tbf, the instance this community is on has a certain political leaning. If your political opinion triggers them, they dont need to let it stand.

The most likely reason so many people post on and sub to a community is because they dont get triggered every 5 seconds.

You dont need to leave the instance your on, just make „freedom news“ or something on any instance where everyone can say what they want. Be the change you want to see.

then why even bother federating? By federating you’re inviting people browsing All, with differing political leanings, to come and comment in your communities. So if all you want is to be an echo chamber, just defederate. problem solved.

to me the answer is pretty clear, they want to have their cake and eat it too. they want to spread their political opinion throughout the fediverse, but restrict opinions from the rest of the fediverse in their own communities. it’s hypocritical.

The funny thing is the fediverse is exactly that. I often imagine it like a bar with tables. You can sit at a table you think might be fun. You can shout over to another table and maybe join them if you feel like it.

The thing is, if you have brought a table (instance admin), you can make the rules there, no matter what the majority thinks.

It does give it a meritocratic vibe as the people skilled enough to make an instance (or google a working script) get to make their rules. as long as other instances dont feel like unlistening, they can go on.

I have had my run ins with them as well and I dont share their ideology either. I dont block their instance because I want to read the technical stuff. They’re still the makers of lemmy.

But I think I cant disagree with them making the rules in their house. The difference to reddit is that they cant make rules anywhere else which is great.

well, again… if you’re just going to tell off anyone casually coming by your table, why bring your table to the bar in the first place?

            Thats easy to explain.

If you go to a bar with a couple friends because you like the bar, someone comes to your table and feels the need to rain on your parade because they heard some opinion of yours they dont agree with, do you have to leave? No. You tell them to keep their opinion to themselves. Imo thats the equivalent of telling someone off.

Most importantly, a lot of people on social media cant distinguish between disagreeing and insulting. I am very quick to ban these as well because just because it is important for them to be right doesnt mean I or my users have to take it. Disagreeing is okay, trying to be right isnt.

If you go to a bar with a couple friends because you like the bar,

I think that’s where your bar analogy breaks down. Sure in a real life bar you can enjoy the ambiance, food, drinks, service etc of a bar without having to actually interact with other patrons. But none of that applies to the fediverse.

Most importantly, a lot of people on social media cant distinguish between disagreeing and insulting. I am very quick to ban these as well because just because it is important for them to be right doesnt mean I or my users have to take it. Disagreeing is okay, trying to be right isnt.

I’m fully okay with banning people who throw insults, this isn’t about that at all.

Au contraire. You go to the bar with your friends. I dont know about you but if I go to a bar with friends I have to interact with them and maybe others because people enjoying themselves attract other people/attention.

You’re taking my analogy too narrow. There are different ways to word disagreement and there is no marker over some speech bubble like in an rpg. You can just feel someone is not a good fit and disengage or tell them you’re okay with them leaving.

honestly you have just completely lost me with your analogy and how it applies to Lemmy at this point. Yes, most Lemmy instances federate with other instances (“friends” I guess in your analogy), but the point is Lemmy.ml is clearly not interested in having “friends” in that sense.

That can happen. Glad you were able to admit it.

What I meant was ml isnt everyones cup of tea and vice versa. If they disagree with how you conduct yourself, they might take action as is their right. Just accept that it has no implications over you or them.

I’ve joined this instance because of the rules and the communist lean

No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia. Code of Conduct.

Be respectful, especially when disagreeing. Everyone should feel welcome here.

However it’s clear that the worldnews modding rotten. Fascist/xenophobic/antisemite users have their posts alive while those who call them out get hidden or even banned.

As it is the main news community of the instance, I understand how it can be seen as an instance issue instead of user preference to use some smaller community.

I agree, thats bad news (hehe). Have you tried either reporting said actions (via the button or mail to the admins)?

If that doesnt help, document three obvious cases and make it public. Ask for the two instance rules in question to be removed since the instance doesnt acrually abide by them and having them but not enforcing them is bigotry in itself.

You might have to do that a couple times but if you can stay constructive and report+block every troll while doing this you might drive change. I would know, I changed a lot of places for the better.

It is hard though because all, lazy people, bigots and trolls will have a field day coming after you. I would know, I was there multiple times.

        Good luck.

Good ideas. Blocking actually only hides content from the user, it doesn’t lead to admin action.

I know that. But getting harassed leads to people stopping their action so I block every troll without warning. That way I can keep going even if they start flooding in. I must have like 300 accounts on my blocklist by now.

I dont block different opinions, mind you.
