“I don’t quite agree that Israel does not adhere to international law. When a country’s existence is threatened by Iran or Hamas, it’s not so easy to respond strictly according to international law. If some are allowed to declare they want to destroy the state of Israel, then Israel must have the ability to defend itself,” Merkel said.
At the same time, she emphasized that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine violates international law.

Obama is up there for sure, but Merkel went from (what I thought of as) one of the most brilliantly shrewd practitioners of geopolitical realpolitik in the western world to essentially a Russian apologist… which is frustrating and depressing to integrate with my previous opinion of her, because it largely points towards her being uncritically russophilic, and moreover, intentionally blind to a LOT of the typical modern Russian geopolitical playbook.
If attacking a sovereign country is legal, that means your legal system is broken, not that the attack is justified.

Israel’s attack on Iran had one main objective: shifting the attention away from the genocide in Gaza. It also helped Bibi cement the fragmented Israeli population behind him. Last objective was to drag the US in his war against Iran, something he has been pushing for years.
